Maunga
The word maunga is the Maori word for mountain. When a person is reciting their pepeha, they identify important places to their iwi such as their maunga, awa and marae. A pepeha is like a story that connects you to your ancestry. A person’s maunga is usually the first important place listed in a pepeha, and each iwi or hapu have their own maunga.
