The sacred Kingfisher/kōtare is one of the best known birds in New Zealand. You may recognise the hunched deep greeny blue silhouette waiting on a powerline or other elevated position where they wait for their prey.

They are called “sacred” because many believe them to have control over the waves and power over the ocean.

Kingfishers are found widely in New Zealand  but mainly elevated observation posts to hunt from, banks or suitable trees to make nests in.

Some believe that the Kingfisher is the promise of abundance, of new warmth, prosperity and love that is about to unfold within your life.
